A New Year of Blessings
A
s we greet the new Jewish year, we traditionally say, "May the old year upon its curses end..." This year, these words have added meaning. This year 5765 (2004-05) was a most difficult year for faithful Jews. It is ending with the seeds of new destruction that are liable to sprout in the coming year. But we also believe that the seeds of hope are firmly planted within last year's destruction and that they will ultimately prevail.

The danger to the settlements of Hebron, Beit El and Shiloh, to Karnei Shomron and Kedumim are just a small part of the problem. The deeper danger is that Israel is industriously destroying the public that is positioned to be its sole support when the illusion of disengagement comes crashing down -- as it inevitably will -- burying in its ruins the entire idea of normalcy upon which the State was built.

Just as in the days of the Judges, it will be the smug elites who will be the first to abandon ship. The painful truth, though, is that at this point there is no other group that is prepared today to fill their shoes and to lead the country.

This is where our challenge lies. The orange public must prepare itself now to take the reigns. We must be united as a society, armed with the intellectual and political tools to oust the elites and to lead the nation on a new course. If we don't focus our efforts on leadership now, the collapse of the virtual disengagement reality can trigger loss of our last vestiges of sovereignty in the Land of Israel, G-d forbid. It will make Gush Katif look like child's play.

Paradoxically, there is great hope within this terrible crisis. The changing of the old guard of the Return to Zion is closer than ever. But the slopes are the steepest and most dangerous as we approach the mountain's summit. The hardest part of the journey is still before us, and Manhigut Yehudit will surely be facing many challenges in the near future. Obstacles are being set in our path because we have located the weak point of the current power structure and are positioned to take practical action against it. We know that G-d does not present us with trials that we are unable to overcome, and are confident that with His help, we will reach that summit.

May the new year with its blessings begin.

The Significance of the Central Committee Decision
A
t first glance, it may seem that Sharon's victory in this week's Likud Central Committee vote, in which the Committee decided by a small majority not to advance the primaries, was merely technical -- a difference of one percent in Sharon's favor whose only significance is that we will have to wait a few additional months until the primaries. This is the impression that Netanyahu tried to create immediately after the results of the voting were announced.

The truth, though, is completely different. This was much more than a small tactical downfall. It was a severe strategic blow. Just after the Six Day War, the extreme Left opened an offensive on the consciousness of the nationalist majority in Israel. That offensive culminated this week in decisive victory. After the extreme Left had conquered the strategic cultural, academic, judicial and media power centers, these same elites also took control of the security and economic systems, learning to rule the state regardless of the results of the elections. Throughout, though, the National Camp firmly opposed the elites. Even if it did not know how to lead, it at least managed to make its ideals heard.

Sharon's victory in the Likud Central Committee this week changed all that. The National Camp has folded its flags. Just as Sharon joined the left -- whom he perceived as stronger -- and began to serve its ideals, so the National Camp has joined Sharon and virtually eliminated itself.

Sharon's slogan in the Gush Katif referendum, "It's either me or Feiglin", has turned out to be precise. While in the past we justifiably said that Manhigut Yehudit expresses the aspirations of the National Camp while Sharon expresses an approach outside that camp, this no longer holds true. Today, after the pogrom in Gush Katif succeeded, the nation -- with the Likud as its authentic representative -- has adopted Sharon's path.

Most of the national forces in the Likud will likely lower their heads and jump on Sharon's bandwagon. Only two essential forces will continue to oppose him: the Likud founders and Manhigut Yehudit -- Landau and Feiglin. The founders will never give in. The same people that proudly opposed the British mandate and stood up against the persecution of the Left will not surrender now. However, they lack the power to attract the youth, to grow and to lead so necessary at this point. They will not be a threat to Sharon and his cronies.

Manhigut Yehudit will also stand firm. Some people in the orange public may understandably not feel comfortable with the Likud. But like it or not, the Likud is the party that represents the nation. There is no other relevant political tool with which to achieve leadership of Israel and no other relevant political playing field. When that point is understood, the only logical conclusion is that it is more vital than ever to increase our power in the Likud.

Our immediate operative goal is to strengthen our numbers in the Likud, preparing for the day that reality will come crashing down around the other options. Be warned -- because only Manhigut remains as the sole viable alternative to the hegemony of the left, it will draw all the fire.

But that's ok. We're used to it.

For more on this topic, see Moshe Feiglin's latest article, "Patty Hearst Makes Aliyah."

Gearing up for the Primaries
W
e are still busily preparing for the primaries. It is entirely possible that Sharon, who knows how to take advantage of success, will initiate early elections. Manhigut Yehudit is preparing for that scenario while we continue to organize for the scheduled primaries. We still need volunteers for this project. Now more than ever, we need to establish the belief-based alternative in public consciousness.

The real contest is not between people, but rather, between ideas. The belief-based candidate advocates progress toward fulfilling our Jewish mission. All the other candidates represent various versions of survival that have failed in the past and will inevitably fail in the future. But never fear -- in the end they will seek us. It is crucial to bring our leadership alternative solidly into public consciousness. This could very well shorten the period of crisis and destruction. The following campaign flyer is an example of the material being prepared for the primaries.

Following is an English translation of the content of the flyer:

Moshe Feiglin to head the Likud.

Feiglin -- Because he believes in G-d!
Education, society, respect in the family
-- it won't happen without tradition!
Firm hold on the Land of Israel
-- it won't happen without faith!
Standing proud against international pressure
-- it won’t happen without roots!
Freedom of thought in academia and media
-- it won't happen without Jewish culture!
True justice and mutual respect
-- it won't happen without Jewish law!
A life of modesty, hard work and integrity
-- it won't happen without Judaism!

We need leadership with faith!

Call 1-800-200-613 (Israel) now and get involved in the campaign. With your help, Manhigut Yehudit will restore true Jewish leadership and values to Israel.

The Political Arena has Moved from the Knesset to the Likud
If the head of the Likud decides, he will implement nationalist policies with his natural right wing coalition. But if he so chooses, he can always turn left -- in total disregard of his voters -- and connect to the Left and the Arab parties. The political playing field has essentially moved from the Knesset to the Likud. It is not the small parties that will determine the future of the nation, but rather the person who leads the Likud and the tapestry of internal forces within the party. Whoever is dreaming of a new rightist party or a united national/religious front must ask himself if ten additional mandates for the religious or right would have prevented the disengagement. The answer is that Sharon, with the help of the Labor party, Shinui and the Arabs would have easily overcome this (hopeless) achievement. In fact, the great strength of the Likud made it difficult for Sharon to persuade his colleagues to incorporate the Labor Party in the government. It's quite likely that he would have preferred a smaller Likud.

The right wing parties outside the Likud have no real political significance. The way to influence Israel's political reality is in the only relevant arena. And that arena is the Likud.

Six years ago Manhigut Yehudit began to recruit members for the Likud. Our goal was to recruit thirty to forty thousand new members. This recruitment would have translated into five hundred Central Committee members, a significant bloc of belief-based MKs in the Likud, and a realistic chance that the belief-based candidate could lead the party in the upcoming elections. (Today the Likud has 130,000 members, of whom no more than 100,000 are likely to vote.)  Obviously, under those circumstances, no minister interested in his political survival would have supported the disengagement.

Many attacks from within prevented us from achieving our recruitment goal. Nevertheless, we succeeded in building a significant belief-based "outpost" in the ruling party. Now is the opportunity for belief-based people who are capable of freeing themselves of old political concepts to get out of the defensive and take the offensive. They can join the Likud, enter the leadership arena, and become a decisive force on the political scene. In another two years the new Likud Central Committee will be elected. Those who join today will by then be eligible to vote. They may vote and be elected to the new Likud Central Committee.

Do you want to prevent the next disengagement plan? The most realistic thing you can do is to join the Likud!

So what are you waiting for? Now is the time to join!

Although once you join the Likud you will need to wait 16 months before you can vote -- this is no reason to wait.

1. There will be many other elections in the future. If you don't join now you won't be able to vote the next time around either.

2. Tens of thousands of new members joining the Likud through Manhigut Yehudit is a political explosion. Even if you can't presently vote, the very fact that there is a large and organized group within the Likud has great influence on the party. Our strong and resolute presence will help to determine the Likud Knesset list and the identity of the leader of the Likud. By just being a member of the Likud through Manhigut Yehudit you acquire the ability to actually influence the outcome of the elections.

So if you haven't joined yet -- this is the time to do it! If you are an Israeli citizen living in Israel the time has come to join Manhigut Yehudit in the Likud. Call 09-792-9046 (Israel)  for information.

Zionism's Underlying Messianism
The following is a new chapter from a series, excerpted from Moti Karpel's Hebrew book, "The Belief Based Revolution,"  offering an in-depth discussion of the faulty roots of Zionism that have brought about our current crisis, and its solution -- the belief based revolution.

Until now we have discussed the Western consciousness and anti-Semitism that motivated Zionist ideology. But underneath the cognate forces, there was an unconscious inner drive that set the historic Zionist process in motion. The rational awareness served only as a framework that allowed the soul-foundation of Zionism to surface.

For thousands of years, Judaism cultivated the aspiration for the redemption and its essence -- the yearning for the Land of Israel -- in the souls of its adherents. This Messianic energy was suppressed within the consciousness of the Jewish People for thousands of years of exile, without a controlled way to express itself. The dream to return to Zion was an immense "spring" in the collective Jewish soul, just waiting for the opportunity to be released. As opposed to previous false Messiahs who failed to implement the redemptive process in tangible terms, Zionism managed to release the internal Messianic energy within the framework of calculated and concrete steps.

So we see that although the rationale and consciousness of the Zionist process were Western, its inner energy was authentically Jewish. While the Messianic element is not recognized and does not appear at all within the Zionist conceptual system, it is constantly bubbling just under the surface. It is the motivating factor of the historical process even though the process defines itself in secular terms.

Everybody is familiar with the famous photograph of the Israeli paratroopers crying at the Western Wall as it was liberated in the Six Day War. In many ways, this photo defined the Israeli experience of the Six Day War. What made this photo so touching and so definitive? In actuality, it may cause its viewer a second of cognitive dissonance. Obviously secular paratroopers, who at the time came by and large from the militantly secular kibbutzim, weeping with joy at the Western Wall, a place totally insignificant to their cultural world. What were they crying about? The answer is that their joy was generated by the Messianic energy programmed deep in their souls. This concealed plane of consciousness is at the soul-root of Zionism and is its catalyst -- despite its completely secular conscious orientation.

The mere mention of the Land of Israel produces holiness in the heart of the listener (Chatam Sofer).

Greatness and success usually sprout after despair from a terrible descent (Rabbi Yaakov Emden).

And I will gather you from all the lands and I will bring you to your Land…And I will give you a new heart and a new spirit… and you will live in the Land that I gave to your forefathers and you will be My nation and I will be your G-d (Ezekiel 36).
