PISD: Is There a Cure? |
|
Nobody expects anything good to come out of Annapolis. Nobody expects anything good to come out of negotiations with the Syrians. There is not one citizen of Israel who honestly believes that peace and security are just beyond the horizon. But the "peace process" rolls inexorably on. Nothing -- not common sense, not Jewish sentiments, not security threats, not flying missiles and not horrendous acts of terror -- gets in its way.
"What is going on here?" the bewildered Israeli asks himself. "Are our leaders so blind? Don't they see the dangers?"
It is time to understand that our leaders are not stupid. They also understand that the "peace process" will bring neither peace nor security. But the dreams and goals of the leftist minority that controls this country are different than the dreams and goals of the Jewish majority. For them, surrendering the Temple Mount to our enemies is not a "painful concession." On the contrary; it is part and parcel of their goal. If we are not rid of it, how can we ever become a normal nation? How can we erase Israel's Jewish identity and replace it with formless Israeli identity if we are still attached to our forefathers in Hebron, Beit Lechem and Shechem? How can we be citizens of the world when those irritating settlers keep chaining us to our Jewish roots?
Is there a way out of this madness? Is there a cure for our collective political insanity stress disorder? What is the solution?
Stand Up and Be Counted
The obvious and urgent solution is Jewish leadership for Israel. Nothing else gets to the root of the problem. But how do we achieve our goal?
The answer to that dilemma is on two planes. On the practical plane, it is urgent to register for the Likud and to convince your friends and family to do so as well. Israel desperately needs a belief based prime minister, and voting for Moshe Feiglin in the next Likud primaries is the way to make that happen.
But there is also a popular/spiritual plane that can no longer be ignored. It is not enough to register for the Likud and then forget about Jewish leadership until it is time to vote. It is time to stand up and be counted. Every person who understands that Israel needs authentic Jewish leadership must stand up and say so. Talk about it at work, at school and at family and social gatherings. Tell everybody you know about Moshe Feiglin and the Jewish leadership alternative. We must create a critical mass of people who are willing to do more than just eat their hearts out at home. If the government continues with its political insanity, we will no longer be able to rely on others to demand a change. Each and every one of us will count.
Last week, we saw the first signs of people outside the "Orange" camp who were willing to stand up and be counted. The Beitar fans who jeered during the moment of silence for Rabin were roundly condemned by one and all. But in truth, the Beitar fans expressed what so many Israelis are afraid to even think. The article that Moshe Feiglin wrote for the NRG website in support of the Beitar fans struck a sensitive chord in Israeli society. The article triggered over 500 talkbacks, and it was the most read article on the website on the day that it was publicized.
As frustrated individuals, there is not much that we can do. But if we collectively set our sites on the true goal -- authentic Jewish leadership for Israel -- the Jewish majority will win!

| The War of Dreams: By Moshe Feiglin |
|
Although this article was written by Moshe Feiglin over eight years ago, his analysis then is even more ominously pertinent today. When the article was written, it was the Golan Heights that were slated for abandonment. Now it is Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the Golan Heights.
The paralysis that has gripped the Right as it faces the impending danger to the Golan Heights is not easily understandable. After all, the Right has some excellent claims. The Golan Heights are a strategic asset. The Golan has vital water sources. It is an important Zionist enterprise. So much of our soldiers' blood was spilled there. The intentions of the other side are dubious. Why don't these arguments convince anybody?
A teenager goes with her mother to buy a pair of shoes. The mother can explain to her daughter that the shoes will not last for more than a week. She can explain that they are not comfortable, that they don't match any of her clothing and that they are not shoes at all, but rather a pair of screwdrivers. But all of her excellent arguments will not help. The shoes that the teenager chose are not meant to protect her feet. Instead, they serve a dream. And a dream has more power than reality.
The basic assumption of the Right was that we all have the same dream, but that we disagree as to how to realize it. This is the situation in civilized countries throughout the world. There is a dream -- a fundamental national ethos -- that is shared by all. Disagreements, as heated as they may be, revolve around how to realize the dream. But that's not how it is in Israel. Here the dispute is not how to realize the dream, but rather on the definition of the dream. We fooled ourselves for years. We believed that we had a common dream, but that each side emphasized its own angle. There are those who seek a religious redemption and there are those who seek a secular redemption, those who emphasize universalism and those who emphasize nationalism. Each side has its own path, but all are united in the desire to settle our land and to bring Jews here to live in peace.
But we were mistaken. The Zionist dream is not settlement, not aliyah (Jewish immigration to Israel), and not even peace. The Zionist dream is normalcy. Settlement, aliyah and establishing the State of Israel were all tools to achieve the magic goal: to be a normal nation, a nation like all other nations. This normalcy, of course, contradicts Judaism. Judaism distinguishes between the holy and secular, between light and darkness and between Israel and the nations. We are not normal as a matter of principle. But it was so easy and enticing to become confused and to relate to the tool chosen by Zionism (settlement and aliyah) as to the goal. Since we now had a mutual goal, we could jump on the bandwagon without constantly checking its fundamental nature or the direction in which it was traveling. We also did not feel the need to build a different wagon, or at least to direct it toward a different goal.
How does this connect to the Golan?
The Golan served the Zionist dream well. It provided wide open spaces (without too many graves of our ancestors) just waiting to be settled. Even the kibbutzniks settled there. It made us look so normal -- just like real Australian farmers. But then, about twenty years ago, our perception changed. From then on, we believed that we can fulfill our dream of normalcy -- not by building settlements -- but by destroying them; not by helping Jews to immigrate to Israel -- but by helping non-Jews to immigrate to Israel; not by establishing a State -- but by integrating into the New Middle East.
In the words of authoress Dorit Rabinyan in a television show commemorating Rabin's assassination, "For me, the peace process means forgetting that I am Jewish."
As we said, a dream is much stronger than any reality.
The teenager will buy the useless shoes and if there is no miracle, Israel will retreat from the Golan Heights. All of the Right's convincing arguments not to do so are irrelevant. Retreat from the Golan now serves the Zionist dream. The Jewish nation will change direction only when a different dream triumphs. All that we need is to begin to dream it.

| Arabs are NOT the Problem: By Shmuel Sackett |
|
Kislev, 5768 November, '07
Israeli politicians are busy 24 hours a day trying to solve the "Arab problem". Deals are made, complicated agreements are signed and dangerous risks are taken. In an effort to make the Arabs happy; terrorists are released, Jews are kicked out of their homes, shuls and yeshivot are smashed and billions of dollars are taken from Jewish poor and given to the "Palestinians".
After all has been said and done, there is still no peace. Want to know why??? Because all of these efforts are going towards a problem that simply does not exist. There is NO Arab problem in Israel -- period! A Jewish problem? Oh yes, that there is; but not an Arab one.
Let me give you some numbers. These numbers are 100% real and can be confirmed. They come from Dr Michael Wise, co-author of "The Arab Population in the West Bank and Gaza -- The Million Person Gap". Recently, Moshe Feiglin, chairman of Manhigut Yehudit, and I sat with Dr Wise. The discussion was fascinating.
At the present time, there are 1.4 million Arabs living in Judea and Samaria, 1.0 million in Gaza and another 1.35 million living throughout the rest of Israel. This brings the total to 4.75 million. In those same areas there are a total of 5.7 million Jews. That means that Jews outnumber the Arabs: 5.7 million to 4.75 million.
In Jerusalem, there are 230,000 Arabs compared to 460,000 Jews. (That's double!) Of these 230,000 Arabs, only 7,000 of them have full Israeli citizenship. The remaining Arabs (223,000) have a "blue identity card" which entitles them to vote for the mayor of Jerusalem and to receive National Insurance (Bituach Leumi) benefits but does not allow them to vote in national Knesset elections.
If you are worried about birthrate, it is interesting to note that in 1995 the Jews living outside of YESHA had 80,000 babies while the Arabs had 36,000 babies. In 2006 in those same areas, the Jews had 108,000 babies while the Arabs once again had 36,000. This clearly shows that, thank G-d, it's the Jews in Israel that are having far more babies!
What all this means is that any way you look at it, Jews are the majority in Israel. Even today, including Gaza, we are 55% of the population in the country. While it would be wonderful to be 95% - and eventually 100% - that is still good news! Think about this: Jews existed throughout history while being the overwhelming minority in every land in which they lived. Jews thrived spiritually - and many even financially - while being tiny little minorities.
Today in the United States, for example, there are 300 million people; only 5.2 million of them are Jews. That translates to less than 2%. Imagine that -- Jews thriving (for the most part), building businesses, buying nice homes, living comfortable lives and all this while being less than 2% of the general population!
If Jews can succeed at 2% why do we worry when we are 55%? Israeli leaders today act as though we are the minority. They beg the Arabs for love. They kneel down before the Palestinians as slaves before their master. They give them land, money, weapons, free their terrorist prisoners, educate their kids and give them everything they ask for.
Why is this done? As I wrote at the top of this article it's not because of the Arabs. It's because of a very small handful of leftist Jews who have a strangle-hold on the leadership of the country. This very tiny group holds Israel hostage. They control the media, the army, the courts, the educational system and to a large degree, the economy as well.
This is what needs to be changed! Stop worrying about the Arabs. I assure you that strong, Jewish faith-based leadership will show them who is boss and stop them from harassing us. We must focus on the positive! We must concentrate on the fact that most Jews in Israel want a true, Jewish state.
A recent poll was taken in Israel asking the Jews who live here if they consider themselves "Jews" or "Israelis" and a whopping 80% answered "Jews"!!! Do you understand what that means? It means that 80% are proud of their heritage, 80% know why they are living in Israel and 80% want to pass this on to their children. The problem is that the 20% minority runs the country!!!
Let us stop making believe what the problem is and target our efforts at the one thing that needs to be changed; the leadership of the State of Israel. Shimon Peres and Yossi Beilin have poisoned our Promised Land long enough. The time has come to grab the reigns of leadership away from the 20% whose sole desire is to turn Israel into a Hebrew speaking Singapore. We are much more than that.
For 2,000 years we dreamed of returning to our land. We prayed towards Jerusalem, cried over the destruction of the Holy Temple and yearned to kiss the holy ground. What has happened to that dream? Has it been hijacked by the two Ehuds -- Olmert and Barak?
I, for one, have not given up on that dream and I know that most Jews haven't either. All we need is strong leaders who base their ideology on Jewish values and concepts. A strong and mighty IDF. An educational system that teaches every Jew in the country -- via love and tolerance -- about his/her heritage and traditions. A proud government that feeds its poor, houses its young couples, rewards its Jewish workers and takes care of its old and sick. Forget about the new Arafat, named Abbas, who wears a tie. He can wear a tuxedo for all I care. He is not the problem.
Jewish leadership is the only answer because it zeroes in on the main problem. May Hashem help us bring this dream of new leadership to fruition.

And it came to pass, when Rachel had given birth to Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban: "Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country" (Genesis 30:25)
As soon as Esau's nemesis was born, Jacob no longer feared to return to the Holy Land; as it is written (Obadiah 1:18): "And the House of Jacob shall be fire, the House of Joseph shall be flame, and the House of Esau -- straw."
