Jewish War

"And when you go to war in your land against the adversary who oppresses you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets; and you shall be remembered before G-d your G-d, and you shall be saved from your enemies." (Numbers 10:9)

The above verse in this week's Torah portion holds all the elements that we need to fight the Kassams. But nothing in this verse exists today in Israel. That is why we cannot deal with our current security challenges.

First,
"War".
This is not a low-intensity conflict nor any other type of post-modern aphorism used to blur reality. When rockets and shells fall in Sderot and Kfar Aza, that means that we are at war. He who does not understand that he is at war cannot win.

Second,
"In your land".
The simple and basic understanding that this is our land does not exist today. A government that does not internalize the fact that Gaza is an inseparable part of Israel cannot really fight there. It will necessarily be lured into policing operations. And when here or there it actually accomplishes something, it will immediately be at the receiving end of international condemnation - and justifiably so. If you have decided that you are a policeman, then don't expect the respect reserved for soldiers fighting a just battle.

Third,
"The adversary who oppresses you".
There is a good side and an evil side in this story. It is not just a meaningless conflict. We represent good and our enemy represents bad. This is a war of the good against the bad. The destruction of evil is a lofty cause. This is not the war of survival of the browbeaten weakling gasping for just one more breath of life. It is the war of the Jewish Nation, fighting to realize its Divine destiny.

Fourth,
"Then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets".
The trumpets must also sound in the hearts of the residents of Tel Aviv. This is not the war of the outlying areas alone. Just like the siren sounded on Memorial Day that unites the entire nation around one issue, we must all unite around our common goal and destiny.

Fifth,
"Before G-d, your G-d".
We have a G-d. We are empowered by an unquestionable moral force. We rely on our G-d while we prepare ourselves for war with the utmost military professionalism. We understand that it is not our might that brings us victory, but rather our faith and humility before G-d.

We pray that we will soon merit Jewish leadership that will build Israel's army on the above foundations and will restore Israel's security and national pride.

Shabbat Shalom,

Moshe Feiglin

Saber Rattler

The scent of approaching primaries in Kadimah has turned the heads of this party of corruption into saber rattling hawks. Keen politicians sense the fact that the public has turned sharply right. So now they are trying to prove that they are the biggest bullies in the neighborhood. As we know, Israel's politicians have few inhibitions and even less national responsibility if their personal careers are in jeopardy. The most preposterous and dangerous of them all is Shaul Mofaz. Within the space of a week, Mofaz has already bombed the Iranian nuclear installations and gone for an all out war in Gaza. He is preposterous because it is difficult to imagine a more feeble politician then Mofaz. He is dangerous because he used to be a military man and somebody may actually take him seriously.

It was Prime Minister Sharon who brought Mofaz into the Likud as soon as he was finished with his military career. Sharon wanted a political puppet and he made the perfect choice. Mofaz the military expert became the rubber stamp on all of Sharon's dangerous misadventures. Never - not even once - did Mofaz compromise his government position by sticking to his security principles. Besides Sharon himself, Shaul Mofaz, the Defense Minister of the Expulsion, bears the greatest responsibility for the fact that Ashkelon is being hit with Grad missiles. He is the last person who should be pontificating on security issues in general - and on returning to Gaza in particular.

It is hard to forget the good-faith letter that Mofaz sent the Likud members before the primaries two years ago. "I am a Likudnik with every bone in my body," Mofaz wrote to the members. "I will never leave the party." The only problem was that in the few days it took for the letters to arrive in the mail, polls showed that Moshe Feiglin had pulled ahead of Mofaz in the primaries race. When the Likudniks opened their letters, Shaul Mofaz was already on his way to Kadimah.

The letter would be no more than a pitiful memory if not for the fact that Mofaz is now playing with our lives. He is liable to push the IDF into an un-winnable war in Gaza just so that he could win the primaries in Kadimah.

If you have children in the army, you should ask yourselves if you are willing to endanger their lives just to increase Mofaz's chances of winning the Kadimah primaries, or Ehud Barak's chances of winning the Labor primaries.

Dawn of Reality

In stark contrast to the saber rattling politicians that we heard this week, Efi Eitam was a breath of fresh air. Eitam said that he opposed a military operation in Gaza. He reasoned that a corrupt prime minister does not have the ethical backbone and public support that he needs for such an undertaking. Eitam also explained that it is absurd to risk Israeli soldiers' lives in Gaza just to hand the area over to Abu Mazen when the fighting subsides.

Eitam's words are an important sign that the ability to criticize the government and to think independently is beginning to crack the thick orange shell of the Religious Zionist establishment. If Eitam is willing to make that type of statement, it is clear that there are a lot of people in the Orange Camp who are at least as ambivalent as he is about the Gaza operation.

It is important, though, to clarify our position. Olmert's corruption is not the reason that he should not lead the IDF into Gaza. The reason that he does not have the public legitimacy to do so is due to his direct involvement in expelling the Jews from Gush Katif. The legitimacy of a decision to go out to war is determined first and foremost by its goal. There are goals that are not legitimate, and Eitam mentioned one of them (capturing Gaza in order to give it to Abu Mazen). In addition, the legitimacy of a war is determined by the record of the nation's leader. A leader who took the IDF out of Gaza - despite all the warnings - does not have the moral standing to return our sons to there.

Manhigut Yehudit Press Release

Former Chief Justice Barak to Blame for Low Confidence in Supreme Court

The Israel Democracy Institute released its annual report on Tuesday, showing that public confidence in the Supreme Court has reached a new low of 49%, down from 61% last year. Moshe Feiglin commented that Former Chief Justice Barak and his judicial activism can take the 'credit' for the all-time loss of confidence.

"The control that the judicial branch of government has exercised over Israel's elected officials has not strengthened democracy. On the contrary; it has caused the public to lose its confidence in both," said Feiglin. "Israel's judges should reflect the varied views and traditions in Israeli society and should be elected by the public's representatives in the Knesset. In addition, judges should undergo a public hearing before their election, as is the case in the US. These measures will restore public faith in the justice system."
