How Can we Fix our Country?

Our basic and well-founded assumption is that our nation is fundamentally healthy in spirit. Despite the round the clock barrage of anti-Jewish messages to which the average Israeli is daily exposed, he remains connected to his Jewish identity. In fact, Jewish identity in Israel is growing and developing, expressing itself in the most unlikely places. Since we firmly believe that the nation is healthy, we are confident that the state will enter a process of rectification the moment that the 'enlightened' dictatorship from which we suffer today will be replaced by the Jewish majority in Israel.

A perfect example of how the enlightened dictatorship works is the case of Deputy Prime Minister Haim Ramon. Ramon is a hooligan who has made a career out of politics. He has done his share of damage to the Land of Israel and to our People, and we have no personal sentiments for the scoundrel. His case, though, highlights the urgent necessity to remove power from the enlightened elite and to restore it to the Jewish majority.

Having risen to political acclaim by bewailing the shortcomings of Israel's socialist bureaucracy, Haim Ramon, in his capacity as Justice Minister, went head to head with the extremely undemocratic conduct of the Supreme Court. In other words, he took on the enlightened elite. The enlightened elite did not like that, and found it necessary to dispose of Ramon in the way that it knows best: investigations into his (in this case, moral) conduct. The fact that Ramon was elected by the people concerned no one. Ramon's case was splashed across all of Israel's newspapers and he was forced to resign.

There is no question that Ramon is unworthy of public office. But Ramon is not the issue here. The question is who decides which elected officials serve in the government? The public who elects them, or an anonymous alliance of justice officials with its own, personal agenda?

In Ramon's case, the 'rule of law' gang had so much self confidence that it acted with no qualms about minor details like the legality of its investigative methods. Justice Minister Friedman demanded an official inquiry into the investigation against Ramon – clearly a step in the right direction. But as expected, all the systems that live in symbiosis with the elites - particularly the media - bared their fangs and saw to it that the commission of inquiry into the crimes of the justice system would never see the light of day.

So how can we fix the state? The nation is healthy, but the state stifles it. Not only by mixing into the public's choices, as with the case of Ramon. The state denies the public its freedom of choice in other areas, as well.

A prime example is the Free Education Law. According to this law, the state is responsible for the education of our children. Not only is it responsible, but it prevents the parents from educating their children as they see fit. According to Israeli law, the education of our children is exclusively in the hands of the women who used extremely inappropriate language in a Knesset debate last week. Parents who would like to educate their children outside the framework of the education system must attain special authorization to do so.

The result is clear for all to see. Education has traditionally been the pride of the Jewish People. But with state education, our children's' educational achievements limp along somewhere after those of Iranian children.

Clearly, we cannot undo all the mistakes at once. As a healing measure, we propose encouraging parents to once again take responsibility for the education of their children. Parents would receive education coupons from the government to hire the teachers that they choose. This would create incentive for excellence among the teachers and would eventually create new types of educational frameworks – many of them community based.

The way to fix the state is to gradually restore responsibility to the citizens. We believe in them – remember? The Jewish majority in Israel must shoulder responsibility for its communities and for its country. The state should be responsible for as little as possible, concentrating its resources on security, justice and infrastructure. Everything else should be taken care of by the local community or family.

Currently, the complete opposite is the case. The state interferes in every area of its citizens' lives except for the areas in which it really should shoulder responsibility. True security and justice are the last things on the state agenda. Instead, the state provides us with exactly what we don't need.

Moshe Feiglin Interviewed in Maariv

The following interview will appear this Shabbat in the Zman Tel Aviv section of Israel's Maariv newspaper.

Maariv: What are you really looking for in the Likud? Isn't the National Union party a more appropriate political home for you?

Moshe: Leadership.

Maariv: Please explain.

Moshe: I am looking for leadership. The National Union party is made up of fine people who are correct on many issues. But our goals are different. They want to influence the government, while I want to lead. Our country is in a state of decay and collapse. The train is speeding toward the abyss, just as I have been warning since the Oslo Accords. I feel that I understand the essence of the problem and that I must take the steering wheel into my hands.

Maariv: But you lost the primaries. Netanyahu won. Now what?

Moshe: I do not see the primaries as a loss, but rather as progress. I am sorry that the Likud did not unite after its internal race, as is the norm with other political parties in the democratic world. I am encouraged, though, by the fact that I am getting extremely positive feedback at all the other levels of the Likud. Many Likud members tell me that they did not vote for me in the primaries for chairman of the Likud, but they definitely want to see me in the Knesset.

Maariv: Will you be running for the Knesset?

Moshe: Yes.

Maariv: And can you work with Netanyahu?

Moshe: Certainly. We have a lot of common ground.

Maariv: Mr. Feiglin, what is your message to the Israeli public?

Moshe: I think that we must make the Jewish identity of our state our first priority.

Maariv: A theocratic state?

Moshe: Not at all. Israel must be a state that affords its citizens the liberty to express who they really are. I actually oppose religious parties and religious legislation.

Maariv: So what kind of state are you referring to?

Moshe: Israel should be a state in which every child in the educational system studies Jewish identity for one hour daily. Our children should know our history, our land, the Bible and the prayer book. Whether or not they choose to pray from the prayer book is their choice (or that of their parents). But at least they should be familiar with the glorious history and culture that informs who they are today.

Maariv: And what will you do about the Arabs?

Moshe: This may surprise you, but the Arabs are not at the top of my list of worries. I am much more worried by the fact that when the Left wins the elections, we get leftist policies and when the Right wins the elections, we still get leftist policies. In other words, we do not really enjoy democracy in Israel. Instead, we are controlled by dictatorial powers that are not elected and that represent values that contradict the values of the Jewish majority.

Our problems with the Arabs are a reflection of the problems between the Jews. The Left is fanatically anxious to 'solve' the Arab problem so that they will stop reminding them that they are Jews. They erroneously think that if the Arabs no longer hate the Jews, they will also be free of their Jewishness. This psychosis has accompanied the Jewish people for generations. The Arabs have subconsciously identified the obsessive need of Israel's leftist leaders for their recognition. This is a tremendous psychological asset that they use to manipulate us. That is why there will be no peace with the Arabs until we make peace with ourselves.

Maariv: So you are saying that there is no peace because we try to escape our Jewish identity?

Moshe: Right. As soon as we free ourselves of our identity crisis, we will have peace with our neighbors.

Maariv: And what should we do in the meantime?

Moshe: We must stop getting sidetracked by the Arabs and concentrate on the Jews. Israel should give every honorably discharged soldier who wants to get married free land on which to build his home in the Negev, Galilee, Golan, Judea or Samaria. If you travel today along Wadi Ara or the Negev, you will plainly see that the state has de facto provided every new Arab couple with free land.

Secondly, Israel must give its citizens as much freedom of choice as possible. Every citizen should be able to obtain a broadcasting license and to broadcast on both radio and television to his heart's desire (within the confines of Israel's security needs and common morality, of course). Supreme Court justices should be elected by our elected representatives and undergo a Knesset hearing, as is done in America. Israel should have district elections so that our Knesset members would have to answer to their own constituency.

When Israel comes down on the side of liberty and true democracy, it will be free of the identity crisis of the 'enlightened elites' that has been plaguing us ever since the state was born. Israel will be a Jewish state for the Jewish people. At that point we will be able to deal with the challenges facing us – and triumph!

Torah Sparks: Pinchas

When Pinchas slew Zimri, many said: "Look at this holy zealot! He acts as if motivated by the desire to avenge the honor of G-d and save the people, but, in truth, he has merely found a holy outlet for his cruel and violent nature. After all, it's in his blood--just look at his maternal grandfather..." So G-d described him as "Pinchas the son of Elazar the son of Aaron" in order to attest that in character and temperament he took after his paternal grandfather--the compassionate and peace-loving Aaron.

The true greatness of Pinchas lay in that he acted in complete opposition to his nature, transcending his inborn instincts to bring peace between G-d and Israel.
