Amichai Merchavia HY"D

Amichai Merchavia, 24, fell in the battle of Bint J'bil in Lebanon, protecting Israel from the Hizbollah terrorists.

Amichai was a "settler" from Eli.  Just over a year ago, as a young army commander, he wrote a personal letter to the Chief of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz, in which he described his objections to the "Disengagement".  Amichai expressed his hope for an opportunity to discuss the issue with Halutz.  Halutz was not interested in any discussion, and responded instead by trying to get Amichai thrown out of his unit.  In the end, Amichai was suspended for several weeks.  He was later allowed to return to the command of his unit, and it was in this capacity that he gave his life last week.

Amichai was also among those who protested the expulsions in Amona, as you can see in the attached PDF file.
