Press Release
Former Chief Justice
Barak to Blame for Low Confidence in Court
8 Sivan, 5768 (June 11, '08)
|
The
Israel Democracy Institute released its annual report on
Tuesday, showing that public confidence in the Supreme Court has
reached a new low of 49%, down from 61% last year. Moshe Feiglin
commented that Former Chief Justice Barak and his judicial
activism can take the 'credit' for the all-time loss of
confidence.
"The
control that the judicial branch of government has exercised
over Israel's elected officials has not strengthened democracy.
On the contrary; it has caused the public to lose its confidence
in both," said Feiglin. "Israel's judges should reflect the
varied views and traditions in Israeli society and should be
elected by the public's representatives in the Knesset. In
addition, judges should undergo a public hearing before their
election, as is the case in the US. These measures will restore
public faith in the justice system."
